My Advice: Take Your Lumps

Fanciful rendering of the interior of a carria...Image via Wikipedia
Yesterday I talked about trying to see the little bit of good in everyone. Today I'm going to talk about a circumstance that often makes it very difficult for me to do this. I am talking about when people just don't take their lumps.

One fact people seem to forget is that this is not a perfect world. We all make mistakes. It is the people that avoid the consequences of their mistakes or try to blame others for their shortcomings that really peeve me. It's really hard for me to be understanding and forgiving when you aren't willing to listen to feedback and criticism, accept the correction and penalty, make amends and then just move on.

I'm not saying that I am perfect when it comes to taking my lumps. But I learned a long time ago that a simple 'I'm sorry' can go a really long way to soothing feelings and
smoothing relationships.

Have you ever been on the receiving end of a mistake that a business has made and been really steamed about it? I don't know about you, but when I am offered an apology and a token to compensate me for the mistake, I just feel better. Sure, it doesn't take away all the hurt feelings and aggravation, but it helps.

And those businesses that don't make the effort to rectify their mistakes? Well, I am no longer their customer. I have voted with my feet and moved on to better treatment and customer service.

I want to give other people second, third and more chances and I am sure you do to. So I say 'suck it up and don't suck.' Take your lumps and make it easier for others to forgive you when you make a mistake.
