My Advice: Take Your Lumps

Fanciful rendering of the interior of a carria...Image via Wikipedia
Yesterday I talked about trying to see the little bit of good in everyone. Today I'm going to talk about a circumstance that often makes it very difficult for me to do this. I am talking about when people just don't take their lumps.

One fact people seem to forget is that this is not a perfect world. We all make mistakes. It is the people that avoid the consequences of their mistakes or try to blame others for their shortcomings that really peeve me. It's really hard for me to be understanding and forgiving when you aren't willing to listen to feedback and criticism, accept the correction and penalty, make amends and then just move on.

I'm not saying that I am perfect when it comes to taking my lumps. But I learned a long time ago that a simple 'I'm sorry' can go a really long way to soothing feelings and
smoothing relationships.

Have you ever been on the receiving end of a mistake that a business has made and been really steamed about it? I don't know about you, but when I am offered an apology and a token to compensate me for the mistake, I just feel better. Sure, it doesn't take away all the hurt feelings and aggravation, but it helps.

And those businesses that don't make the effort to rectify their mistakes? Well, I am no longer their customer. I have voted with my feet and moved on to better treatment and customer service.

I want to give other people second, third and more chances and I am sure you do to. So I say 'suck it up and don't suck.' Take your lumps and make it easier for others to forgive you when you make a mistake.

Trying to See A Little Bit of Good in Everyone

1921 editionImage via Wikipedia
Today wasn't a banner day for me in dealing with other people.

Seems some people just can't be nice, honest, polite or fair.

What's new, right?

Out of sheer frustration, I sent out this tweet:

WOW! I am up to my eyeballs in bull crap! Ridiculous! Time to contact a bull crap removal team... And, oh yeah, some people just suck.

Then I reconsidered and sent out this follow-up tweet:

OK, I should probably clarify. What people do or say can suck. Despite acting sucky, there is probably a bit of good in them somewhere.

I admit it can take an extraordinary effort on my part to see the good in other people when they are acting anything but good. But that is the thing I needed to remind myself today. Just because people act sucky and say sucky things doesn't make them sucky.

I know this seems very Pollyanna of me. But I think the thought that there is a little bit of good in everyone is one of the few things that keeps me from crawling into a cave and sealing myself in with a large boulder. Seeing the good in others is how I deal with difficult people.

More thoughts on this subject tomorrow...
