My Hero: Zero!

Actually, my second hero for the month of June, and the second in my week of TV heroes, is Schoolhouse Rock. These catchy little songs have stuck with me into adulthood and helped me learn about math, science, grammar and American History. Some of my favorites include:

My Hero, Zero
Three Is a Magic Number
Figure Eight

Conjunction Junction
Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here
A Noun Is A Person, Place Or Thing

Electricity, Electricity
Interplanet Janet

Elbow Room

I'm Just a Bill
No More Kings
The Preamble
The Shot Heard 'Round The World

What makes Schoolhouse rock hero worthy is its educational value and its lasting impact on its viewers like me. The combination of animation, catchy lyrics and tunes I believe is a powerful teaching combination. According to Wikipedia, Schoolhouse Rock creator David McCall got the idea for the series from one of his sons who was having problems in school with multiplication tables yet could remember all the lyrics to popular rock songs.

The sad part of all of this is that the Schoolhouse Rock series was canceled in 2001, although the team came together as recently as 2009 to complete the series Schoolhouse Rock: Earth!

So let me end this post the way many of the Schoolhouse Rock episodes ended:

As your body grows bigger
Your mind grows, flowered
It's great to learn
Cause knowledge is power!
