"Happy is the country which requires no heroes," said Bertolt Brecht.
Yet all around us, new heroes emerge daily from politics, sports and entertainment. There appears no shortage of heroes in America. We love our heroes: unquestioningly, uncritically and to excess. We venerate them as role models; we put them on pedestals.
We don't realize when we raise some people up, we lower ourselves in comparison. Through hero worship, we wind up skewing our view of life into a struggle to emerge on top, to achieve public esteem, to be judged as better than other people.
We forget "A hero is a man who does what he can." ~~Romain Rolland
